Service Master was founded as a mothproofing company in 1929 by Marion E. Wade a minor league ball player. The Company had its beginnings in Chicago and Wade worked out of his home. After recovering from temporary blindness caused by a chemical accident in 1945, Wade was inspired to create a company that viewed “each employee and customer as being made in God’s image—worthy of dignity and respect.” He was succeeded by Ken Hansen and Ken Wassner who shared that view and the company was incorporated in 1947. When ServiceMaster started back in 1947 there were 6 employees and the revenue was $ 125,000. Today nearly 55 years later the foundation laid by Mr. Wade is a family of companies employing almost 40,000 people and system wide revenues of $8 billion.
In 1952 ServiceMaster expanded to carpet cleaning, establishing one of America’s first franchise businesses. Today there are over 4500 franchises around the world, and ServiceMaster Clean has been a leader in the restoration and cleaning industry for over half a century. The company is so highly thought of that when a 757 slammed into the Pentagon, the power of yellow was on display. This restoration was the most extensive cleanup in the history of the company.
